Thanks for sharing, Chip. That's what I love about your blog. You're "real" and honest and helpful. It's awesome that you found a mentor in Rick Christian and that he was willing to help you. Sometimes, people touch our lives in unexpected ways. And I agree that it's how we respond to life's failures that shape us. I always tell my sons that failures are the building blocks of success. There's no shame in failing as long as we learn from it. And, as @Grandma_Dorothy would say: Sometimes you need to close a door in order for another to open. It's scary, I know, but it can also set you free. Again, thank you for the post. I wish you and your writers success as you continue to touch the world.

Your story is inspiring and a true reflection of God's love and care for us. Man makes his plans but the Lord directs his steps.

Been there. Done that. Thanks for the shout out. :)

Good stuff. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for your sharing a bit of your life, Chip, especially what you call your biggest disaster. Right now I'm claiming as meny mentors as I can find, and you through your blog are one of them.

Kyle L. Olund

Claiming as MANY mentors. Yes, I have spent my life in publishing/editorial work, thank you very much. :)

In the question about what sets ole Chippy apart I'd like to add my two cents.

Chip has always stood out to me because he is passionate about great writing and powerful stories. I mean, passionate. Not just ... oh, yeah, I like books and I could make money doing this. He loves books. He's picky about the authors he reps, and that says a lot to me. He doesn't do this just for the cash, he loves it, he lives it. You can tell because, like he said, he was a writer, publisher, agent, and editor. He didn't end up in this industry, he was meant to be here. Just like some of us were born to be writers. Chip was, too, but he was also meant to help writers.

He's also got a unique personality and doesn't take everything seriously. He can make fun of himself, probably just his insecurity coming through, but ya know... ;)

I first came across this blog 2 years ago. And I've read every blog on here. There is wisdom here I haven't found in to many other places online. If I have a question about something writing-related, he's the first person I think to ask. If you have a question, before you ask, search through the archives of his blog. You'll find a lot of answers.

But yes, Chip stands out to me because of his pure love for great stories executed with great prose and when he signs someone I don't think he's got only himself in mind. He truly wants to help his authors succeed.

Every one of Chip's authors who I have talked to has said wonderful things about him. Not just his skills in this industry, but also HIM.

My nose is brown. Time for a shower. :)

Wow. Thanks for taking the time to share these questions and answers. You're so real and that's nice!

Jim MacKrell

A great blog...thanks

Life has successes and disasters, and it's how we respond to them that shapes us into the people we are.

Could I just say, "Amen!"?

Kit

Chip! I had no idea you did that book with Lisa Beamer. And what? I've know you for a whole year now. Very cool! Thanks for sharing.

Like the big, girly font, btw.

thanks for the shout-out, chip. I'll add this: even though you are the busiest agent in America, you are always willing to make time to chat with your authors about our work. So thanks!

Jenny B. Jones

I did not know the "rest of the story" on the Beamer book and your 9/11 experience. Very cool. And congrats on being the busiest agent in the country. Even though last year you got "Agent Best Resembling Brad Pitt," I think busiest agent is good too.

As one of Chip's newer writers, I just have to say that he treats us not just as his authors, but as his friends. It's an honor to work with him.

Chip, Great blog. I read Susan Meissner's Shape of Mercy because of your blog. Incredible book!! I haven't read Quaker Summer, but I am 100 pages away from the end of Lisa Samson's The Passion of Mary Margaret and I love it! I have learned a lot from this blog but I also get recommendations from you. I clicked onto the Stuff Christians Like because of you, and I often read it aloud to my husband so we can laugh together. So thank you for adding to my life.

Lynette Eason

Thanks for sharing, Chip. This was a great post even if my name didn't make the list of "writers we should be watching for". That's okay. I still consider you a friend. (LOL)

Seriously, thanks for the insight into the industry that you offer. I appreciate the time you take to write your blog.

Now, I'm off to work some more--hoping to make that list one day. ;)

Thanks Chip. When you called to tell me Crossing Oceans was "great", I cried. Well, I mean, I had something in my eye anyway or I was dicing onions or something. Ehem...well, anyway, your opinion means more to me than just about anyone. Ashley's right. You're absolutely amazing. I owe so much to you. Sniffle. (allergies, not y'know...)

Jessica

I have to jump in and agree with Chip about Gina's Crossing Oceans. Wait til you guys read it. It's AWESOME.

I'm familiar with Ginger Garrett's writing as well. If you haven't read her yet, you should.

I'll have to check out some of the other writers you mentioned too.
