Hawaii? Pshaw! You don't know 'gorgeous' 'til you've been to New Zealand - where it's summer right now just quietly.

Thanks for another interesting insider look. Hope you enjoy your vacation and don't do too much work!!!

"Get a group of stud critiquers to help you improve."

Nah, you don't need a group; just one. Me. I've been told I'm quite the "stud" critiquer ... *G*

I had this amazing, insightful, knock-everybody's-socks-off comment to make, but the only thing I can force my frozen fingers to type right now is, "Hawaii Chip is not on my happy list today."

Sharon A Lavy

Chip we are all jealous. We would rather you were suffering right along with us!!

Cindy Thomson

We have snow and ice here and....I'm NOT miserable. Do you hear me?????

;-)

Marti

This proves it: warm climate, cold heart. Ouch.

Still and all, I look forward to another year of wise (albeit chilly) answers. And I'm pretty sure kilts and hulas don't mix, so let's not go there, okay?

We spent some time there once on vacation! I envy you as I am freezing here in Florida! Thanks for some good answers to great questions.:)

Based on my experience, I would add to #2 the need for a nonfiction writer to really know his/her subject matter. I thought I was ready to write my book back in the mid-1990's, but I wasn't. God sent me back to teaching and to get my master's degree (even though I didn't want to do either one). Now, the book I am writing online is much better than anything I could have written before.

Back in 1979, I was in Hawaii in January and it rained almost the whole time--records were broken. So, consider yourself blessed and enjoy!

My thoughts:
#1) That's a cool process for coming up with a title. (I love brainstorming!) I had heard that authors don't necessarily have much of a say in their book titles, and now I've got a better idea of why. I suspect these "fairly creative types" may know what kinds of titles will catch potential buyers' eyes better than I do. (My title is pretty lame right now, IMO.)
#2) I've seen my writing improve drastically since I joined a writing review site. I've been fortunate to get a small group of helpful reviewers who have kicked my rear, ripped apart my prose, and applauded the few times I got something right.
#3) Wow, I never would have had the, um, ingenuity? creativity? dishonesty? to think of buying my own books so I could hit the bestseller list. Personally, I don't think it's worth it: I don't respect myself when I'm consciously manipulating other people.

1. I'm not miserable. I'm just staying inside as much as possible.

2. I get lots of compliments on the title of my book, Is That All He Thinks About? I had a different working title, and I would've LOVED to have been in the room when they were brainstorming a better one.

Great article and thoughts. As an unpublished author, the last thing I want to hear is that the key to getting published is to be a better writer. But, it is also the most important thing I need to hear. Nothing makes a book more marketable than being readable!

As an an author working toward being published the last thing I want to hear is write better to get published. But, it is the most important thing I can hear. Nothing makes a book more worthwhile of reading than being readable.

Still and all, I look forward to another year of wise (albeit chilly) answers. And I'm pretty sure kilts and hulas don't mix, so let's not go there, okay?
