Wish I'd been at that conference...I can see it needs to go on my goal list. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences, plus some good author names to look up!

I especially appreciated your explanation of the genre . . . and the list of authors. I'll be checking them out soon.

Thank you Chip. I will forward this to the rest of the board members.

It was a great conference. I enjoyed hearing you speak as you are so funny but I was also very touched by your comments about obedience. Great post, excellent ideas for future conferences. Looking forward to your Richmond seminar.

Your comments about authors being interviewed instead of sticking to one topic (which may or may not be what everyone in the room needs) brought me to a decision. From now on, except in special situations, I'm not accepting invitations to speak to writers unless it's in this format. I've tried to convince those organizing these events that this is the way to do it, but so far, most of them want "one topic." I'm speaking today about research - and it's an interesting topic - but I know it won't help everyone.

Also, having one person be in charge of gathering questions before the meeting is great. This way everyone in the group has some input.

Thanks for your post, Chip. You helped me to finally reach a decision. (S)

I really like the idea of getting a local college involved. I'd love to send more authors to more colleges for discussion opportunities with the students too.

I absolutely love the idea of an author interview (I find I learn SO much just from talking to other writers about their process). I also think incorporating other forms of writing, like you mentioned (playwrights, screenwriters, newspaper reporters) is a great idea. I know I for one supplement my income freelancing and this kind of writing has only strengthened my writing muscles...

never mind the rest of my muscles are completely unrecognizable.

Great thoughts.I was loving that theatre across the street from the Hyatt in Indy. Wished they would've had a show going on that weekend.
